New Waves Show
Friday marked the opening of the "New Waves" show at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. My piece "Encroachment" was included in this juried show. I had been rejected several times before, so did expect the same response again. I was happily informed of the opposite! It's a show case for new and up in coming Virginia artists. All media. A lovely night.
A big surprise was seeing my work hang in the same venue as the "Nexus " show, which included such luminaries as Christian Boltanski, Chuck Close and Cindy Sherman.
This piece, is a part of a series which began, some years ago, when the areas around Virginia began to undergo deforestation, development and change, not always for the better. My reaction to these scenes are an abstract representation of this phenomena.
I've hand dyed all the fabrics, and machine sewn, quilted and stitched the piece. It's about 45x45". A lot of the fabrics used (and essentially what I use now) are re-purposed, and recycled.

It is a real treat to have my work hanging at this lovely facility, I especially treasure the fact that it is a multi media show.
It continues until the end of April 2013.

My word for next year is 'reckoning' 2. : a settling of accounts reckoning>. . I think that there will be a reckoning on many levels in my small sphere. Needs to happen and even though painful on some accounts, it is a necessary thing.

'Glory to God in the highest
And on earth peace good will toward men'
Born unto a virgin was God's only begotten Son
Emmanuel (God with us) is the title of The One
Mary's father was of Judah, the linage of a king
Mary's mother was a Levite, from Aaron's priestly string
The world beheld a brilliant star a shining in the east
The sign of Christ, The King of Kings, Lord of Lords, and High Priest

Working more on the Lazarus Series.
Mixing the media.
Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha, were friends of Jesus. When Lazarus fell ill, his sisters sent a message to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick." When Jesus heard the news, he waited two more days before going to Lazarus' hometown of Bethany. Jesus knew that he would do a great miracle for God's glory and, therefore, he was not in a hurry.
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had already been dead and in the tomb for four days. When Martha discovered that Jesus was on his way, she went out to meet him. "Lord," she said, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
Jesus told Martha, "Your brother will rise again." But Martha thought he was talking about the final resurrection of the dead.
Then Jesus said these important words: "I am theresurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die."

Summer passes
The end of a long, long summer for me. So many things that I would like to say farewell to. I can only hope the fall brings peace and grace. I'm hanging on. Putting my fire dress on and hanging on. Art heals. Books heal. God keeps his promises.
I can not control the choices others make, even my family members. I can only pray, and go on... in a blue moon, and the end of the summer of trials.

If I can perfect my faith
Thy Grace is sure to come.
The more I give to Thee
The more I absorb Thy Balm
That heals my bosom’s pangs.
Without Thy Love supreme,
Nothingness all I am?
A dark and barren dream.
Thy Grace is sure to come.
The more I give to Thee
The more I absorb Thy Balm
That heals my bosom’s pangs.
Without Thy Love supreme,
Nothingness all I am?
A dark and barren dream.
