Friday marked the opening of the "New Waves" show at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. My piece "Encroachment" was included in this juried show. I had been rejected several times before, so did expect the same response again. I was happily informed of the opposite! It's a show case for new and up in coming Virginia artists. All media. A lovely night.
A big surprise was seeing my work hang in the same venue as the "Nexus " show, which included such luminaries as Christian Boltanski, Chuck Close and Cindy Sherman.
This piece, is a part of a series which began, some years ago, when the areas around Virginia began to undergo deforestation, development and change, not always for the better. My reaction to these scenes are an abstract representation of this phenomena.
I've hand dyed all the fabrics, and machine sewn, quilted and stitched the piece. It's about 45x45". A lot of the fabrics used (and essentially what I use now) are re-purposed, and recycled.

It is a real treat to have my work hanging at this lovely facility, I especially treasure the fact that it is a multi media show.
It continues until the end of April 2013.
