I have been in the studio. Yay. Submissions, finishing things (yay) and such. This is "Three Hearts with Wings" I am participating, reading looking at Jude's What iffing and diaries. It's really cool there.
Any way there is this and it's August.

Goodbye July..
Summer is moving along. Not beeing a big sun worshiper, I'm an SPF 50 girl, I hunker down in the studio and move it along.

This came out of the dye bin, so nice when the magic happens. This was a loose weave cotton, and the dregs of a few pots just poured into the bin. Then wrapped around an old, rusty wok. Voila!
Keep cool, Autumn is almost here..

the bread and the wine
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.
This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
do this in remembrance of me

What iffing
It's cold day here again in F'burg. But that's ok. I like it. Way better than hot. Made it into the studio. Painting happened.
I've joined Jude's band of merry stitchers what iffing ourselves happily stitching away. A small gift to myself that I can swing. It's nice to see so many together in one spot, you sometimes lose the sense of kinship stitchery fosters. I'm a new kid to the sand box, but it seems a happy place to be.
More dresses taking shape. (It's upside down) !

New Waves Show
Friday marked the opening of the "New Waves" show at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art. My piece "Encroachment" was included in this juried show. I had been rejected several times before, so did expect the same response again. I was happily informed of the opposite! It's a show case for new and up in coming Virginia artists. All media. A lovely night.
A big surprise was seeing my work hang in the same venue as the "Nexus " show, which included such luminaries as Christian Boltanski, Chuck Close and Cindy Sherman.
This piece, is a part of a series which began, some years ago, when the areas around Virginia began to undergo deforestation, development and change, not always for the better. My reaction to these scenes are an abstract representation of this phenomena.
I've hand dyed all the fabrics, and machine sewn, quilted and stitched the piece. It's about 45x45". A lot of the fabrics used (and essentially what I use now) are re-purposed, and recycled.

It is a real treat to have my work hanging at this lovely facility, I especially treasure the fact that it is a multi media show.
It continues until the end of April 2013.
